Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin is the heart-racing story of Yael’s dramatic and dangerous motorcycle race for the chance to kill Hitler. In Yael’s world, the Nazi experiments on Jewish prisoners gave them mysterious powers, including her own ability to skinshift and look like any woman. She’s using this power to pose as the previous victor of the annual motorcycle race, Adele Wolfe, in order to take down Hitler in this story where the Axis powers won and Hitler’s reign of terror never ended. It’s not the race that proves Yael’s biggest challenge, however- it’s convincing the other racers that she is Adele. Heartache proves just as formidable as the pain that’s haunted her since the death camps of her childhood.
This book has a sequel (Blood for Blood) that I’m itching to read (it’s in my Amazon cart, waiting for payday). It’s not that Wolf by Wolf ends with a cliff-hanger per say- I believe it could easily stand on its own- I just want more of Yael’s adventure and to know what happens to this world where Hitler never died. I’m invested in Yael’s story. I think it is that emotional investment in a character and their world that separates a good book from a great book. Its rapid pace, the pages brimming with excitement and elegant phrasing, make it a quick read even at almost 400 pages. I can confidently say Wolf by Wolf is a great book for young adults and older readers.
